Still-life painting class with Carol Tarzier

Still-life painting class with Carol Tarzier

The Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) is pleased to offer a new still-life class taught by Bay Area artist Carol Tarzier. The class will meet from 1 – 5 pm in Studio One on Fridays, starting April 14 and continuing through May 26.

Oil, acrylic and watercolor painters of all levels are all welcome. Tuition for the seven 4-hour sessions is $140. The extra hour each week allows ample time for setting-up, for Tarzier to demonstrate mixing and painting techniques and for students to complete or get a good start on their still-life painting.

The class will focus on creating still-life paintings with glowing color. Tarzier will show students that achieving effective color and light does not have to be difficult.

“We will work from setups with lighting each class. Subjects will include metals, glass, flowers, and fruit. You are welcome to bring things you’ve always wanted to paint and use them to set up your own still-life.”

The series begins with discussing materials and equipment that make painting easier and fun, and then moves on to using light and shade to create convincing volume, creating depth with transparency, mixing grays to make the colors glow, and creating beautiful color relationships.  Should that color be warm or cool? Thick or thin? Pure or mixed with white? Students will learn the answers to these questions through hands-on experience.

Carol Tarzier has been teaching still-life painting for many years at the Academy of Art University. Her paintings have been represented in national shows and museums, including the Salon International at the Greenhouse Gallery in Texas, at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, and at the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Show in Pasadena, CA.

In addition to being a painter, Tarzier is also a sculptor. You can see examples of her work at www.tarzier.com or https://www.facebook.com/CarolTarzierFineArt.

The class is limited to 20 students, and pre-enrollment is required. Oil painters must use odorless thinner only.
