29 Mar Spring workshop on felted wool art with Pamela Blotner
Following her art in felted wool demonstration in January, Bay Area artist and educator, Pamela Blotner, is offering a five-part felting workshop, starting on April 19 and running through May 17. Sessions are Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in Art Studio One. Tuition is $150 for the series.
The workshop will introduce students to felted wool and felt-making as a versatile material and process for making art. Students will explore eastern and western techniques for turning wool into 2- and 3-D art.
The exploration will include learning two processes: hot felting, in which “fabric” is created by applying hot water and agitation to layers of brushed wool; and needle felting, a method of compressing and matting down fibers to form them into desired shapes and volumes using special barbed needles.
Students will first experiment with commercial wool, scraps, pre-made felt sheets, and needle felting with dry fiber. Then they will learn “wet” felting techniques to create their own sheets, incorporating color and pattern.
As the class progresses, students will experiment with numerous techniques and ideas, such as combining felted forms with found objects. Each student will make one or more original pieces of artwork in felt and or mixed media.
Blotner will provide sheep and llama wool roving, felting needles, wool combs and cards, form rubber pads, wooden broom handles or dowels, reed mats or bubble wrap, towels, scissors and mild soap. To cover the cost of these materials, students are asked to pay $30 to the instructor at the first class.
Pamela Blotner is a Bay Area artist, curator, and educator. Her sculptures and drawings explore our relationship to nature, belief and calamity, drawing upon folk and urban stories and on the wisdom passed down through generations to shape culture and ensure its continued survival. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
