The Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) shows the 1956 French film, The Red Balloon (Le ballon rouge), at 1:00 on Wednesday, January 2 in Peacock Hall.

Filmed in post-WWII Paris, The Red Balloon follows a young boy named Pascal who discovers a large helium-filled red balloon on his way to school one morning. As he plays with the balloon, he realizes it has a mind and will of its own.

The movie is the story of their wanderings around the neighborhood and the adventures they encounter. Written and directed by Albert Lamorisse, The Red Balloon features his son, Pascal, in the main role and his daughter, Sabine, as the little girl Pascal encounters with a blue balloon.

Allegorically, the film is a tender, humorous drama of the ingenuousness of a child, as well as a poignant symbolization of dreams and the cruelty of those who puncture them.

The Red Balloon won numerous awards, including an Oscar for Lamorisse for writing the Best Original Screenplay in 1956 and the Palme d’Or for short films at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.

The film runs 35 minutes. All Rossmoor residents and their guests are welcome. There is no charge for the screening.
