08 Jan Paul Kratter demonstrates expressive oil painting Feb. 6
The Rossmoor Art Association is pleased to welcome local artist Paul Kratter, an oil painter as the featured artist at its February meeting.
The demonstration is on Wednesday, February 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in Art Studio One. Doors open at 12:30 am, and the program begins at 1:00 pm. There will be a 20 minute break at 2:00 pm with refreshments and an opportunity to talk with the artist.
Paul will do a demo of an Autumn scene focusing on the thumbnail or sketch stage and he will talk about the important of establishing values using 5 or 6 simple shapes.
Born in San Francisco and raised on the Peninsula, he received a degree in Graphic Arts from College of San Mateo. Then in 1980 he graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Illustration.
He made a living mainly in advertising, which included a long relationship with the National Football League and various Major League Baseball Clubs.
“As time went on, I concentrated solely on wildlife illustration. I worked for a variety of zoos and the Nature Company. I illustrated a number of children’s books, including “The Living Rainforest” with award winning paintings in Communication Arts Annual in 2002. Around the same time I became interested in the immediacy and spontaneity of the Plein Air approach and started painting in the East Bay Hills near my home. I soon had a collection of works and began to show in galleries and join various plein air events.
My style changed almost overnight, although my approach remained intact, utilizing solid drawing skills and portraying strong graphic shapes. Painting outdoors has become a passion. I continue to participate in a number of plein air events annually in California. Each has its own unique topography, light and challenges, which forces me to keep my work fresh and loose.”
In late August each year Paul goes with a group into the High Sierras, sets up camp and paints the magnificent mountains.
All residents of Rossmoor are welcome to this free event, and refreshments will be served. For more information please contact Marcy Wheeler, RAA Program Chair, at 787-9159.
