Joanna Taeuffer demos expressive acrylic painting on October 3

The Rossmoor Art Association is pleased to welcome Joanne Taeuffer, an acrylic painter and Healdsburg resident, as the featured artist at its October meeting.

The demonstration is on Wednesday, October 3 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in Art Studio One. Doors open at 12:30, and the program begins at 1:00. There will be a 20-minute break at 2:00 with refreshments and an opportunity to talk with the artist.

Taeuffer will show how she has developed her expressive painting style, using simple compositions, strong light-and-dark patterns, a flat surface plane, bold brush strokes and a thick application of paint. Her subject will be an old pick-up truck.

“My acrylic paintings begin with canvases toned a bright color like magenta or teal to provide a spirited foundation. Initially I define the large dark and light areas, then I add color and, often, heavier paint with a brush or palette knife for texture. I’m always going for a bit of drama.”

Many Rossmoor residents may identify with Taeuffer’s path to becoming a painter. For many years, she worked as a writer and editor. Then in 2000 she turned 50. She had two goals for the new decade and century: to learn to speak French and to learn to paint. She says, “I can now communicate in both French and paint, although I’m more fluent in paint.”

What has remained the same is her focus on storytelling, just now in paint instead of words.

All residents of Rossmoor are welcome to this free event, and refreshments will be served. For more information please contact Marcy Wheeler, RAA Program Chair, at 787-9159.
