Soiree – Fireside Room – 7-8:30 pm

November 8 @ 7:00 am - 8:30 pm

The Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) will hold its Soiree in the Fireside Room on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 7-8:30 p.m. It will feature Rossmoor artist Lynn Whitson in conversation with RAA instructor, Anna George. Many of Ms.Whitson’s paintings will be displayed around Fireside, which will be transformed into an art gallery. The event is free and open to all.

The Soiree begins with live classical music. Wine and refreshments will be served to make for a festive Rossmoor evening. Audience members will also have the opportunity to mingle with many RAA artists and instructors and to interact with Ms.Whitson about her artistic explorations and her life experiences.

Whitson comes from a family of artists, and her educational background has been very art oriented with a BA in Art History, U of Minneapolis, a BA in painting at Laguna Beach School of Art, and an MFA from the University of California, Berkeley. She moved to Rossmoor in 2018 where she and others launched Art 16, named for their entry on Ptarmigan.

“As a youngster, my father would drop me off at the Art Institute of Chicago on his way to the office on Saturdays. where I would attend the teaching studios. We took trips to Europe, visiting Greece, Italy, Egypt, France, England, Yugoslavia, Turkey, and Lebanon,” says Whitson.

Ms. Whitson was head of the Art/Music and Recreation department at the Memphis Public Library for several years. In 2014, she and a colleague offered a workshop in Grass Valley, CA, still going, on ‘Art and Spirituality.’

“I wanted to take this theme and examine abstract art. To ready myself I researched abstraction, exploring artists and movements I hadn’t given much thought to before,” she explains.

Around 2017 Whitson returned to more recognizable themes, namely

the environment, travel and memories, yet she says they involve “wishful thinking or magical thinking, and selective memories.”

The Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) offers a wide variety of art classes and many benefits for members, namely discounts on classes, invitation to demonstration events, an extensive art book lending library, art films, Soiree’s, a chance to exhibit, open studio times to work on your own with others, and an annual dinner.
