“En plein aire”, art making outdoors, starting Nov. 10, on Thursdays with Afsaneh Michaels 9:30-12:30
December 8 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
“En plein aire”, working outdoors continues
The plein air class taught by Afsaneh Michaels continues at the Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) in which students will work outside in nature, known as “en plein aire”. It can include various media, including drawing or painting, and will be 5 classes held on Thursdays over a six-week period from November 10 through December 15. (No class on Thanksgiving)
First class meeting will be on the Stanley Dollar Patio, and will include an introduction and short demo on how to set up for working outside. There will be a discussion of media, as well as boards, easels, stools, andother items needed for working outside.
Student artists will paint directly onto canvas or paper in situ, within the landscape. Working outdoors will enable artists to better understand and capture the changing details from hour to hour. Students and the instructor will choose a location in Rossmoorin a walk-able area, near rest rooms, and set up their station with portable easels, drawing boards and/or canvases/paper and learn how to work from nature, architecture, or other man-made elements. The instructor engages each student individually.
The practice of plein aire painting is very old and has been extremely popular through the ages as it offers the artist the opportunity to be immersed in nature and witness the drama of changing light and color firsthand. Afsaneh Michaels, our newest teacher at Rossmoor, is a San Francisco Bay Area fine artist, illustrator, painter, and graphic designer and teacher with over 30 years of experience. She has designed exhibits for the Smithsonian Institution and has collaborated in various international museums including in Kenya and Sri Lanka. She has tutored art in Florence and studied drawing in the old master’s style there. Afsaneh has taught in a variety of mediums—pencil and charcoal, oil, pastels, and watercolors.
