Peacock Hall – Artist Stories : Liz Johnston

November 1 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Lecture by:  Liz Johnston

November 1, 2023

1:00-2:30 pm Peacock Hall

Title of lecture: Artist Stories over Lifetime of Living and Working

Elizabeth Johnston who is long-time Rossmoor resident and the education chair of the Rossmoor Art Association will narrate the stories of five Bay Area artists who have successfully designed a life in the arts.

The six participants in this narrative were born in the 1940s, 1950s, or 1960s and experienced the disruptive transition from text- and paper-based environments to the emerging visual culture of 2019 on. Each participant received studio art training and mastered a professional career in another field while maintaining an active life as an artist who was recognized in their community. These individuals might be uniquely qualified to explain how 21st century mid- or late-career professionals made sense of and applied skills developed through visual arts training and practice during the unsettling 21st century.

A profile of each artist will include a short history, examples of their work, and details of how they incorporated visual art practice into their lives. The lecture will include many visuals and allow time for questions and comments.

Elizabeth is a grandmother, artist, and educator, her artwork has been recognized in regional shows and exhibits. Her 50-year career in education included teaching and administrative positions in both K-12 and higher education. During her extended career, she published 27 research articles in peer-reviewed journals.  The lecture will be based on one of those articles (Artist Stories of Studio Art Thinking over Lifetimes of Living and Working).
