Dale Laitinen gives watercolor demonstration on October 4

The Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) is pleased to offer a presentation by Northern California watercolor artist and instructor, Dale Laitinen, on Wednesday, October 4 from 1:00 to 3:00pm in Art Studio One at Gateway.

Laitinen will demonstrate a sierra landscape that includes falling water with mountains as the backdrop. He will paint with watercolor on paper and speak to design, color laying, and the importance of drawing for a painter.

Laitinen began painting more than 40 years ago, and has been painting and teaching full time since 1985. He holds workshops throughout the United States and exhibits widely.

A native of Minnesota, Laitinen has been roaming, living and painting in the American West for much of his life. His depth of knowledge of the landscape is a result of eight years as an independent long-haul trucker traveling the country. He currently lives in the western Sierra Nevada.

The focus of his painting is on the topography of the natural landscape and the intersection between nature and man-made structures. In a series he calls “engineered landscapes,” he says, you may “find a concrete dam that spans a river canyon, a highway that cuts through the desert sandstone, or a shadow of a bridge that crawls slowly across a red rock wall.”

“Mastering the American landscape has been a lifelong pursuit” for Laitinen. That includes capturing “the bigness of the landscape and the optimistic promise of its open space.” His style ranges from realistic to abstract.

Laitinen received his BFA from San Jose State and is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society. He had juried many national and regional exhibitions.

His work is represented in several galleries in California, and he publishes in numerous art periodicals, including The Artist’s Magazine and Watercolor Magazine.

He is the author of “Blue Shadow Country,” a self-published book featuring his paintings. And he has made several videos on painting the landscape, including “The Language of Landscape” and “Landscape Essentials.” His videos are available through ccpvideos.com and dalelaitinen.com.

All residents of Rossmoor are welcome to this free event on October 4, and refreshments will be served during the break. For more information, please contact Marcy Wheeler, RAA Program Chair, at 925-787-9159.
