Abstract Figurative Workshop

Students will be led through a series of prompts of layering a painting in abstraction and then adding in the figure.  You will be taught several techniques of creating a figure in your work, additive, subtractive and negative painting! We will use a gelatin plate to add a monotype~one-of-a-kind print using a masking technique to get a figurative image.  This workshop is suitable for any level of artist.  All supplies are provided through the materials fee.  Bring your own brayer and gelatin plate if you have one.

Colleen Gianatiempo, Instructor

As an artist living in working in the east bay of San Francisco, I live my life the same way I paint, by embracing the mystery, staying open to change, finding courage, honoring my intuition and trusting the journey. This mindset has led me to my colorful, layered, contemporary, distinctive style. I was born an Airforce brat (moved a lot), with two dualing brained parents (engineer/artist) which paved the way for my foundation for everyday life exercising my ability to adapt to change and find comfort in nature which I feel is so important in the art making and creative process. My journey as an artist began when I was 3 years old when I would cut up our family photos and draw on walls with lipstick! That habit progressed to making paper doll clothing, painting, ceramics and so on! In my art career, I have been honored to be a part of many public art projects that have deemed me as “the artist with a heart”. I have been able to give back and share my love for art, ie. Hearts of San Francisco, The Heart of Sonoma, The American Backyard (city of Dublin), Sea Lions of San Fransicso and Small Town with A Big Heart Mural in Martinez. Art has always been a part of my life parallelling my development as a person, through education, raising children and working professionally as a graphic designer. I am honored to hold an MFA in non-figurative abstract painting from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. With three degrees in tow, I have all the knowledge I need to operate my fine art practice and teach and inspire students from around the globe.
