Carol Tarzier – Costumed Portrait and Figure Class

Carol Tarzier – Costumed Portrait and Figure Class

Bay Area artist Carol Tarzier is offering “Costumed Portrait and Figure” this Fall at Rossmoor.  The class will paint in oil or acrylic. It meets Saturdays October 5th to November 23rd, from 12 to 4 pm in Studio One.  Tuition for the eight 4-hour sessions is $245.  The tuition covers a Guild/professional model for three hours 12:30-3:30 every session in addition to the instructor’s fee.   Each class begins with a short demo and discussion; the last class includes a final critique.

“Costumed Portrait and Figure” covers structure of the head and figure.  We’ll begin with monochrome painting, covering the value structure and proportions and getting the portrait to look three-dimensional.  The session will start with four 5-minute poses, then a long pose for 2 1⁄2 hours.  All poses will feature strong lighting, so that the shadows are easy to see and dramatic.

The short demo topics will include the value structure of the head, dimensions of the head, blocking out the forms on the canvas, hard and soft edges, and creating a feeling of space around the portrait.  We will discuss specific facial forms – how to paint the eyes for example.   We will move to color mixing for flesh tones, and color mixing to create light and shadows on the portrait.  Models will be clothed, so we’ll be mixing colors for clothing, hats, and various costumes as well.

Oil and acrylic painters of all levels welcome. Class demonstrations are in oil.  Acrylic instruction is individual.  Oil painters please use odorless thinner only.
