23 Feb Artist Stephen Berry gives watercolor demonstration at RAA April Meeting
The Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) is pleased to offer a presentation by Bay Area watercolor artist and teacher Stephen Berry on Wednesday, March 7 from 1:00 to 3:00pm in Art Studio One at Gateway.
During the demo, Berry will complete a landscape painting, start to finish. He will begin with a brief pencil sketch as he discusses his approach, and then he will dive into the wet work. He will begin by laying in the lighter colors and then, after the break, go back in with darks.
Berry paints in a loose, expressive manner that approaches realism while simultaneously playing with water, gravity and pigment. Largely self-taught as a painter, his watercolors focus on creating an experience of light and space.
He likes playing with water and seeing what it does. He likes experimenting. And he likes the challenge of control and the freedom that comes from letting go.
‘I like the joy and focus I find in painting. Little discoveries happen along the way, and you must decide how you will respond. It is a relationship and a dance.” Berry’s works include nauticals, florals, landscapes, and figures.
Berry was born and raised in Northern California, and he has a deep love for the rolling woodlands, tawny slopes and stark, bold shorelines the area has to offer. He works out of Vallejo and is a member of the Benecia Plein Air Gallery, where his work is on exhibit. He also teaches workshops across the Bay Area.
His work has most recently been featured at the 2017 and 2018 California Watercolor Association’s Nation Exhibition, the Yosemite Renaissance 32 and 33, the Carmel Art Festival, the 2016 Frank Bette Plein Air Festival, as well as in several California galleries and museums.
All residents of Rossmoor are welcome to this free event, and refreshments will be served. For more information please contact Marcy Wheeler, RAA Program Chair, at 787-9159. To preview Berry’s art, visit his Web site and blog at www.seamlessexpression.com.
